Story Summary
In the ancient tales of the Bhagavata Purana, there lived a young prince named Dhruva, whose story exemplifies unwavering determination and self-discipline. Dhruva was the son of King Uttanapada and his first wife, Suniti. However, the king favored his second wife, Suruchi, and her son, treating Dhruva with indifference.
One day, when Dhruva innocently sought to sit on his father’s lap, Suruchi scorned him, saying, “You are not worthy of the throne. If you desire such a position, you must pray to Lord Vishnu for his blessings.” These words stung Dhruva deeply, but instead of succumbing to despair, he resolved to prove his worth—not for the throne, but to seek a greater truth.
Dhruva’s Journey of Determination
Determined to find Lord Vishnu, Dhruva left the palace and ventured into the forest. Despite his tender age, his heart was filled with an unshakable resolve. There, he met the great sage Narada, who was astonished by Dhruva’s determination. “You are but a child,” Narada said gently. “The path to Vishnu is long and arduous. It requires great discipline.”
But Dhruva’s mind was unwavering. “O revered sage,” he replied, “I am prepared to endure anything to see Lord Vishnu.”
Moved by the boy’s sincerity, Narada gave him sacred mantras and instructions for meditation. Dhruva began a rigorous practice of devotion and penance. He meditated under a tree, braving harsh weather, wild animals, and hunger, his focus solely on Lord Vishnu. With each passing day, his self-discipline grew stronger. He reduced his intake of food and water, finally surviving on just air as he reached the peak of his penance.
Vishnu’s Blessings
Dhruva’s intense devotion shook the heavens, and Lord Vishnu, pleased by the boy’s unwavering focus and discipline, appeared before him. As Vishnu’s radiant form filled the forest, Dhruva’s heart overflowed with joy and humility.
“My child,” Vishnu said with a gentle smile, “your determination and self-discipline have moved even the gods. What do you seek?”
Dhruva, initially driven by hurt and ambition, now felt a deeper sense of purpose. Bowing before Vishnu, he said, “Lord, I sought you to prove myself, but now I desire only your blessings and the strength to always walk the path of righteousness.”
Vishnu, touched by Dhruva’s sincerity, granted him a boon. “You shall shine forever as a symbol of devotion and discipline. In the heavens, you will take the form of the Dhruva Nakshatra (the Pole Star), an eternal guide for those who seek direction.”
