In the kingdom of Vidarbha, there lived a beautiful princess named Damayanti, known across the land for her unmatched beauty and grace.
One day, Nala heard of Damayanti’s beauty and virtue and instantly felt drawn to her. But their love was destined by the gods themselves. Through a series of divine messages sent by swans—yes, talking swans—Nala and Damayanti came to know of each other. Their love blossomed even before they met, fueled by tales of each other's goodness and noble hearts.
When the time came for Damayanti to choose a husband, her father, King Bhima, held a swayamvara—an ancient practice where a princess could choose her husband from an assembly of suitors. Kings and princes from all across the land gathered, including Nala, hoping to win Damayanti’s hand in marriage.
The Test of the Gods
However, Nala wasn’t the only one who had heard of Damayanti’s beauty. The gods themselves—Indra, Agni, Varuna, and Yama—were smitten by her and arrived at the swayamvara to ask for her hand. But Damayanti’s heart was already set on Nala.
Knowing this, the gods decided to test Damayanti’s loyalty. They took the form of Nala, appearing identical to him, and stood in front of her. Damayanti, faced with five men who all looked exactly like Nala, could have been confused. But her love for Nala was so pure and true that she recognized him immediately. It wasn’t just his appearance that gave him away—it was his manner, his heart, and his honesty. She chose him without hesitation, and even the gods acknowledged her unwavering loyalty and blessed their union.
Nala and Damayanti were married and for a time, their life was filled with joy and prosperity. But fate had other plans, and their loyalty to one another would soon be tested in the most difficult of circumstances.
The Curse of Misfortune
Not long after their marriage, Nala fell under the spell of Kali, the evil spirit of discord and misfortune. Kali, envious of Nala’s happiness, vowed to destroy him. He influenced Nala to lose his kingdom and wealth in a game of dice to his brother, Pushkara. Overnight, Nala, once a powerful and noble king, found himself stripped of everything he owned.
Unable to bear the thought of putting Damayanti through hardship, Nala decided to leave her in the middle of the night, abandoning her in the forest. But Damayanti’s love and loyalty were stronger than Nala’s despair. Despite the pain of being left behind, she never doubted his love for her. She knew that Nala was acting out of love and believed in his honesty, no matter what had happened.
Nala’s Journey of Redemption
Meanwhile, Nala, tormented by guilt and sorrow, wandered the forests. During his travels, he encountered the Nagas, or serpent gods, and received the gift of disguise. He transformed into a different appearance, hoping to serve others and rebuild his life. Nala took on the name Bahuka and became the charioteer for King Rituparna of Ayodhya, learning the secrets of dice and mastering the art of chariot racing.
Though Nala had changed his appearance, his heart remained true to Damayanti. He longed to reunite with her but felt unworthy after all the misfortune he had brought upon himself. Little did he know that Damayanti, even in his absence, remained loyal, continuing to search for him with hope and unwavering love.
Damayanti’s Search and Reunion
Damayanti, heartbroken by Nala’s departure, never gave up hope. She sent out messengers across the kingdoms, seeking any sign of Nala. Her loyalty and faith in her husband remained unshaken. One day, she heard of a charioteer in King Rituparna’s service, a man with a mysterious past. Something in her heart told her that this man, Bahuka, was Nala in disguise.
To confirm her suspicion, Damayanti devised a plan. She sent word to King Rituparna that she would hold another swayamvara, knowing that Nala, as Bahuka, would have to return. When Bahuka arrived with the king, Damayanti recognized him instantly, even in his new form. It wasn’t his appearance that gave him away but the honesty and love that she had always known.
In a tearful reunion, Nala and Damayanti embraced, their love stronger than ever before. With the knowledge and skills Nala had gained during his time as Bahuka, he was able to win back his kingdom from Pushkara in another game of dice, this time defeating misfortune once and for all.
