Choosing greatness over longevity, they asked for the son who would be extraordinary. Thus, Markandeya was born—a child of incredible intellect and devotion. But as his 16th birthday approached, a shadow loomed over his family. They knew that his life was nearing its destined end. However, Markandeya was not afraid. His faith in Lord Shiva was so strong that he believed his devotion would protect him from death.

Facing Yama, the God of Death

On the day of his 16th birthday, as the god of death, Yama, arrived to take Markandeya’s life, the young boy remained calm. Instead of running or hiding, he went to a Shivalinga (a symbol of Lord Shiva) and embraced it with all his heart, continuing his prayer and chanting Shiva’s name with pure devotion (Shiva Purana, Chapter 43). Markandeya's faith in Lord Shiva gave him the courage to face death itself.

As Yama approached and threw his noose to capture Markandeya’s soul, something incredible happened. The noose fell around both the boy and the Shivalinga, symbolizing that Yama had also captured Lord Shiva himself.

Furious at this, Shiva appeared in all his divine glory, breaking free from the linga and confronting Yama. With fiery eyes and immense power, Lord Shiva declared, “How dare you attempt to take the life of my devotee, one who is under my protection?”

Shiva, in his wrath, struck Yama down, saving Markandeya from death and granting him eternal life. Markandeya was blessed to remain 16 years old forever, a symbol of the immortality that devotion and righteousness can bring (Shiva Purana, Chapter 44).
